Presentación
Desde su creación en Octubre de 1995, el Grupo de Combustibles y Motores de la UCLM (GCM-UCLM) ha trabajado en el estudio de los procesos de combustión y formación y caracterización de emisiones contaminantes en motores de combustión interna alternativos, principalmente Diesel, desarrollando técnicas de muestreo y análisis másico, químico y morfológico de partículas, y herramientas de modelado con capacidad predictiva y de diagnóstico. En la mayoría de los trabajos realizados hasta el momento, se ha estudiado con profundidad el efecto de los combustibles empleados, lo que ha conducido a un desarrollo notable de la capacidad de caracterización física y termoquímica de los combustibles de automoción, en particular de los biocombustibles. En el este campo, el Grupo de Máquinas térmicas de la UCLM se ha convertido en una referencia a nivel internacional.
La mayoría de los trabajos desarrollados por el grupo han tenido una importante componente experimental, que ha sido posible gracias al progresivo equipamiento del laboratorio, sobre el que se ha reinvertido el 100% de los recursos obtenidos a lo largo de los últimos 21 años, procedentes tanto de contratos con empresas como de proyectos institucionales y ayudas de equipamiento científico. El valor de dicho equipamiento se aproxima hoy a los 4.000.000 Euros.
Entre los principales logros de investigación durante estos años pueden destacarse los siguientes:
- Demostrar y cuantificar los beneficios ambientales del consumo de biocarburantes procedentes de aceites vegetales usados o vírgenes, grasas animales, mezclas con bioetanol, combustibles líquidos derivados de gas natural, emulsiones de agua en gasoil
- Desarrollar métodos para cuantificar el impacto ambiental de las emisiones de partículas, basados, no solo en las mediciones másicas, sino también en su composición química, en sus distribuciones de tamaños y su irregularidad geométrica.
- Cuantificar las incertidumbres y los errores causados por ellas durante el diagnóstico experimental de motores ensayados en banco.
- Desarrollar modelos matemáticos para simular la cinética química de los procesos de combustión diesel y de los procesos de gasificación de biomasa sólida.

- Análisis experimental y teórico (combustibles de sustitución y mecanismos de reacción) del proceso de autoencendido de combustibles convencionales y de biocarburantes
- Estudio de las prestaciones y emisiones contaminantes de motores diésel operando en modo dual con gases de carácter renovable.
